Ever since I was a young boy, whenever visiting Amsterdam, my uncle would take me to their establishment to enjoy a nice cup of hot cocoa and a homemade piece of pie or cookie. Then for a few years I kinda forgot about them until I moved to Amsterdam. As I started rediscovering the city I often inevitably ended up at the Twins. Only Gary still survived, sitting in the shop as a reigning queen, jokingly bitching the lady that helped him out around, well, I think he intended it as a joke, but I often got the impression she took more offence than he ment to give. He recognized me instantly, even though it had been almost a decade since he last saw me and in that decade I had grown from a shy adolescent to an overconfident twenty something. I spent a fair amount of time chatting with him, he was old, but still sparkling with energy, full of stories, about his career, his brother, an endless succession of strays and travellers that enlivened his existence, he was even still quite feisty, not afraid to flirt or even come on to anyone who tickled his fancy. They truly were characters, that rare kind of human you don't encounter often enough who is authentic, true to their nature and unapologetic about it. It was a shock when Gary also moved on.

Christmas has never been a big deal to me, but every year I quietly spent a while thinking about the twins while the family gets together for Christmas dinner. They were quite possibly the best gift this world was ever given for Christmas.Alban Paulhttp://www.monsieurgrat.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-782138671916303805.post-66079384479939169422016-04-08T00:14:31.998+02:002016-04-08T00:14:31.998+02:00I ran across this site by accident as I am getting...I ran across this site by accident as I am getting ready to go to Amsterdam for a few weeks and am feeling a bit nostalgic, I Googled the Christmas Twins even though they are gone. Your writing came up. Obviously I recognize your painting that you did of them. I first met the Twins in 1972 and they have been part of my Amsterdam experience for so many years. They saw lots of highs and lows of my life over those 37 years that I knew them or Gary after Gregory died. When I was at the lowest point of my life, in 1999/2000 I went to Amsterdam for 5 months where Gary and Cindy helped me rebuild. I will always be so grateful for that. Whenever I am in Amsterdam I always pop by the old shop's location to remember and reminisce the same way that I always go to my grade school and the house I was born in just to take a look. So I Googled Christmas Twins and your site came up. I recognized your painting, of course. I met them in 1972 and they were a huge part of my Amsterdam life and would see them for a few weeks every year or year and a half, when visiting family. When my marriage crapped out and a number of negative things occurred at the same time I went to Amsterdam in late 1999 to rebuild my life. Gary and Cindy were wonderful and such a great help and I saw them every day for 6 months. I am so lucky to have had dinner with the two of them about a month before Gary passed. Still have a hat Gary gave me and a picture of Ruby and lots of pictures and memories. I stop by the old shop every time I am in the city, for a few minutes, to reminisce......even if it has changed....as I do my school, the house where I was born and Hagenius. Thank you for your story.
